Content

Know by names such as "Condition Oils," "Dressing Oils," "Anointing Oils," "Hoodoo Oils," at ‘The Mystic Dream’ we prefer the name “Conjure Oils." In addition to describing a practitioner of Hoodoo as in the term “conjure doctor,” the word conjure also comes into play when describing our relationship to the herbs, minerals and essential essences that comprise our oils, for utilizing them in magical oil requires a skill separate from what a perfumer possesses as it is not scent alone that we are coaxing, rather we seek to conjure their spiritual energy, enlisting their aid as one may enlist the aid of a saint or an angel. Rootwork, being a form of natural magic, recognizes that herbs and crystals have their own inherent spirit, present whether acknowledged or not, yet the adept conjure doctor seeks to have a familiar relationship with these spirits, a respect and understanding that best engages these spirits. More than ingredients, they are our allies. Through traditional associations and our own personal relationship with our herbs and minerals we craft oils to aid in certain conditions (‘condition oils’ is another common term used for oils of this type, for they are often used to bring about desired conditions) such as ‘Fast Luck’ or ‘Money Drawing’ or ‘Uncrossing,’ all named for their effect. Oils without so obviously themed names such as ‘VanVan’ or ‘Cleo May’ have a tradition of being used for certain conditions that have been passed down through folk magic.

The use of oils for magical/spiritual purposes is referenced as far back as the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt, and are referenced in the Old Testament book of Exodus chapter 30 verses 23-29: Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh… and of sweet cinnamon… and of sweet calamus… and of cassia… and of oil olive… and thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil. And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony, and the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense, and the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot. And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy.

Common uses for conjure oils are:

-Wearing the oil to scent and empower your person... Some gamblers may prefer to rub 'Fast Luck' oil on their palms before they go to roll the dice, although someone with chapped skin may choose to simply dab some on his or her cuffs. If you are going to wear some on your hands be sure not to rub your eyes. Those with sensitive skin may want to avoid direct contact with oils, especially near sweat glands. Some love drawing oils contain cinnamon, and should be kept away from parts of the body that love often arouses.

-Anointing sacred objects... Be careful if rubbing these oils on certain metals, which may then tarnish or corrode. Certain crystals, such as Selenite, will not fare well when exposed to liquids. Otherwise, applying oils is a wonderful way of charging a particular item with specific energy. Rubbing a rabbit's foot with VanVan oil is said to generate even more luck, and lodestone magic often entails bathing it in whatever oil is in resonance with that which you seek to draw towards you. If you work with a Mojo Bag you will want to feed it, with liquor or cologne or a conjure oil; this is often done in a quincunx pattern, five dots spread out like the fivespot on playing cards or dice, a traditional manner of anointing that is associated with creating an artificial crossroads. Name papers, which most often are utilized as an ingredient in certain spellwork such as when placed within a Mojo Bag or beneath a candle, can also be anointed with conjure oils (although some choose to use Spiritual Sachet Powder for this purpose, as oil can blur what is written on the paper.

-Dressing a magical candle... How this is done depends on the type of candle you are working with. For glass-encased candles you may use a chopstick of similar item to poke holes around the wick, then pour drops of oil into those holes. For other candles you will have to get your hands oily (or wear rubber gloves if need be). If you are doing a spell to draw things towards you then hold the candle with the wick pointed outward, and from wick to base wet the candle with oil, your hands moving towards you just as you wish to draw towards you whatever condition you are working for. For magic meant to banish certain conditions the opposite is done; you draw your hands from base to tip away from you. For a reversing candle, which are black and red, you will begin with both hands in the center of the candle where the two colors meet, then draw the oil in opposite directions.

-Use as aromatherapy... Some folk like to drip a few drops of conjure oil in their diffusers or on a disk of incense charcoal in order to fill the room with magical vapors. With certain oils this may work fine, however others such as 'Stop Gossip' will have an undesirable smell that you will not want to have saturating your space or even be downwind from. Other oils have irritants that are bothersome to the eyes and lungs, so use caution. You may be working to draw a lover who will take your breath away, so don't asphyxiate yourself just yet.

How you use conjure oils depends on your preferences and magical prowess, whereas there are many traditional uses there is always a place for you to be innovative.

Cupressus sempervirens was known by the ancient Greeks and Romans as "the mournful tree", sacred to the rulers of the underworld and to their associates, the Fates and the Furies. It was customary to plant it by a grave, and, at the time of a death, to place it either before the house of the decedent or in the vestibule, to warn those about to perform a sacred rite against entering a place polluted by a dead body. No Roman funeral was complete without cypress. Mourners carried its branches as a sign of respect and the bodies of the great were laid upon cypress branches before interment. According to Ovid, the tree was named after Kyparissos, a favorite of Apollo. The young boy accidentally slew Apollo’s beloved stag. He became so remorseful that he besought the gods to punish him with everlasting gloom. In compliance they transformed him into a cypress tree. The cypress is the principal cemetery tree in the Muslim world as well as in ancient and modern European cultures.
